River View Coal, LLC is the operator of the River View Mine and the Henderson County Mine. We are located adjacent to the Ohio River in Union County, Kentucky providing low-cost barge transportation for domestic and export markets. We have extensive resources to keep us safe, efficient and productive with Alliance Coal technical expertise combined with support from our affiliated factories and maintenance shops.

The River View Mine is the largest room and pillar coal mine in North America. We currently have 9 super continuous miner units at the River View Mine and produced 10 million tons in 2022. We also have one super unit in development at the nearby Henderson County Mine. At full production in 2025, the Henderson County Mine will have production capacity of 6 million tons annually. We provide a low-cost, reliable fuel source for electricity generation in Kentucky and around the world.

Roof Bolter Trainee

Job Description

Reports to: Section Foreman/Mine Foreman

The essential functions of this position were determined to be but not limited to learning to do the following tasks while obtaining your experienced certification:

1. Learn to operate a roof bolting machine installing roof support into the mine roof. This consists of drilling the proper depth hole at the proper distance and placing the proper length glue stick and bolt with required plates, pans or boards into the mine roof.

2. Load supplies (roof bolts, plates, pans, boards, glue and other roof support materials) onto the roof bolting machine.

3. Tram or move the roof bolting machine from one place to another and hang or help the cable to keep it from being damaged.

4. Hang curtains and maintain proper ventilation and methane checks while roof bolting machine is in operation.

5. Make required examinations on the bolter (pre-operational checks, and dust parameters checks).

6. Other duties may be required as assigned by the Section Foreman or the Mine Foreman.

Work Objectives: To learn how to support the mine roof safely and efficiently by the use of roof bolts installed in an organized pattern with a roof bolting machine. This process takes place in areas that have been mined or need additional support due to having hazardous roof conditions.

Work Schedule: Will work a schedule developed by mine management. Miners will work a rotating shift between days and seconds. Overtime may be required by the section foreman or the mine foreman.

Program Benefits

  • Base Pay: $28.33/hour

  • Starts at $28.33/ hour. After 45 working days underground, you have a wage increase to $30.60/ hour and after signed off on the Roof Bolter you top out at $35.22/ hour.

Additional Information

Position Summary: Employee must be able to lift 50 to 100 pounds regularly. Operate equipment and use various hand tools including hammers, knives, etc. as required. Work closely with others in a team effort. Must have the ability to comply with all safety requirements, to react to changes in conditions, and to handle other essential tasks as assigned.
